PATHS
Berlin, 5 June - 18 July 2009
Opening Friday 5 June 2009 from 6 pm
Galerie Mario Mazzoli will host my solo show 'Paths' curated by Daniela Cascella.
Cascella: "In Paths, Paolo Inverni uses his own singular way of "hearing through": an acoustic equivalent to the term "to glimpse", so to speak. What he wants to grasp is not an impossible fixedness of his places, but their transitory existence, their continual renewal both in memory and actuality. His vision is not just backwards, but also a recovery of what used to be, to bring it into today. He chooses six places relevant to his past and in each of these places he reproduces a piece of music just as dear to him - by Steve Roden, William Basinski, Christina Kubisch, Akira Rabelais, Painting Petals On Planet Ghost, Nuno Canavarro, one that belongs to his personal collection of memories. [...] He triggers a procedure for reactivating sounds and places, claiming that there are infinite versions of each of them, and reasserting the importance of personal creative, emotional routes. [...] An image does not hold just one story, a musical piece just one sound, a landscape not just a single distinct trace. For each of them and their way of combining themselves, we conjure up a feeling, an emotional tone, a Stimmung, to steal a term from the German language. Changeable and transitory, and yet we sense the atmosphere, the aura."
The show consists of an artist's book with cd, two audiovisual installations, a video piece, and a series of photographs on lambda print.
